A case of involuntary spasm movements in amputation stump
نویسندگان
چکیده
Painful jumping stump is characterized by persistent choreiform or myoclonic involuntary movements and severe neuropathic pain in the stump of a limb following amputation. This syndrome is also defined as„ trepidation du moignon‟, convulsive movements of the stump” or“jumpy stump”.The pathophysiology and etiology have not yet been clearly defined. We describe a seventy four year old man, who has severe neuropathic pain and involuntary muscle contractions in the amputation stump. We suggest that, there is a need for further clinical and electrophysiological investigations in order to understand that exact mechanisms play a role in the devolopment of the disorder.

Involuntary movements of pelvic stump
Although involuntary movements of stumps are less frequent than phantom sensation or other neurological sequelae of limb amputation, they represent a phenomenon that has been known for many years. The pathophysiology remains unknown, but it seems to be related to damage to the peripheral nervous system. Treatment is not standardized, but antimyoclonic drugs seem to be useful.
متن کاملIlizarov Stump Lenthening Can Aggravate Phantom Limb Pain – a Case Report
Ilizarov is an accepted technique for lengthening short amputation stumps to improve prosthetic function andrehabilitation. The relation of stump lengthening and phantom limb pain (PLP) has not been reported in literature. We present here a case report of a transfemoral amputee who had a flare up of PLP following stump lengthening. He responded well to a combination of pharmacological therapy and...

The organization of primary motor cortex (M1) of adult macaque monkeys was examined years after therapeutic amputation of part of a limb or digits. For each case, a large number of sites in M1 were electrically stimulated with a penetrating microelectrode, and the evoked movements and levels of current needed to evoke the movements were recorded. Results from four monkeys with the loss of a for...
متن کاملNonspastic hemifacial spasm confirmed by abnormal muscle responses
BACKGROUND Hemifacial spasm is usually diagnosed by inspection which mainly identifies involuntary movements of orbicularis oculi. Assessing abnormal muscle responses (AMR) is another diagnostic method. CASE DESCRIPTION We report a case of left hemifacial spasm without detectable involuntary facial movements. The patient was a 48-year-old man with a long history of subjective left facial twit...
متن کاملVideo-assisted contralateral treatment for bronchial stump diastasis after left pneumonectomy.
Postoperative bronchial stump failure is a life-threatening complication, and several surgical approaches and procedures have been developed to close the stump. In this report, we describe a case of left mainstem bronchial stump diastasis after pneumonectomy for lung cancer, in which the bronchial stump was re-closed using a contralateral approach with video-assisted thoracic surgery, with good...
